Theory Test

Theory Test

Based in Ripon, and covering Knaresborough, Northallerton and surrounding areas, D Beckwith Driver Training can help you prepare to succeed in your theory test and beyond...

Before taking their practical test, all learner pupils must first past their theory test. This may seem daunting, but with a little training and revision, you should pass with flying colours. I work with my pupils to ensure that they are familiar with all aspects of driving theory ahead of their test.

The theory test comprises of two modules: 50 multiple choice questions based on theory and a hazard perception module, during which pupils will be tested on their ability to identify road hazards.

Theory Test

Topics covered on the theory test include:

  • Identifying road signs
  • Stopping distances
  • Driving in varying weather conditions
  • Car safety

To pass the theory module you must get a score of 43 out of 50. Pupils are required to give single answers for most questions, though some will require multiple answers.

There is also a hazard perception module, which pupils are required to sit after their theory test; you will be given a short break in between.

You must pass both the theory and hazard perception modules to successfully complete your test.

Hazard Perception

Hazard perception is an important part of your theory test and a skill you will need for confident, independent driving. I encourage all my pupils to develop their hazard perception abilities and to independently identify hazards and developing hazards while learning. Pupils' confidence will grow as they learn to adjust their road position and speed correctly in anticipation of hazards.

The hazard perception test requires you to identify hazards in 13 video clips showing everyday traffic scenarios. Pupils must click the mouse button once they see a hazard developing. For each clip, pupils will receive a score between one and five, depending on how quickly they reacted to the hazard.

Any event which causes you to change direction, speed or stop is classed as a hazard.

When you're able to confidently identify and react appropriately to hazards, you'll be well on your way to test success.

Don't forget, you can also take a free mock theory test at any time at www.safedrivingforlife.info

I recommend purchasing a copy of the Highway Code to ensure you're fully prepared for your theory test.

I offer comprehensive theory test training to all my pupils. Lessons are available in Ripon and the surrounding areas, including Thirsk, Knaresborough, and Northallerton. If you have any further enquiries please do not hesitate to get in touch on 01765 605 933 or 07968 017 903.
